H - Bedworth United
Zamaretto League - Central division |
Saturday 9th April 2011
Woodford United 0 - Bedworth United 0
This somewhat uneventful encounter never reached the beauty of a wonderful spring afternoon and ended in a stalemate, but only after a stunning penalty save from Woodford’s keeper Matt Finlay in the final 15 minutes of the match. Throughout the 90 minutes both sides struggled to get any fluency in their game with the final ball being either underhit, overhit or blasted high and wide with neither keeper being called in to constant action. Chances proved to be few and far with probably the best chance falling to Bedworth’s Levi Ramsey on 10 minutes when a good run and cross by winger Alex Dean found the big striker in the box but his attempt at a clever flick did not have the power to beat Finlay at the near post. Woodford’s Neil King nearly broke the deadlock on 20 minutes when he picked up a loose ball on the edge of the box only to see his strike hit a defender and take a wicked deflection to spin up around the post and to safety. It was the visitors turn just before half time when Danny Edmond went on a mazy run to get himself into the right side of the penalty area only to hit his shot high over the bar for a let off for the home side. Bedworth lined up with three big central defenders and the introduction of Woodford’s tall striker Ricky Johnson at half time gave the home side more aerial power against a strong backline but The second half never really burst to life until the final period when on 75 minutes Woodford’s Chris Jackson was adjudged to have tripped Alex Dean in the box with the referee pointing to the spot To give Bedworth the opportunity to pinch the points. Woodford custodian Matt Finlay had different ideas and he flung himself to the right for a superb save low down at the post from Craig Guzelis’s Firmly taken spot kick to ensure a share of the points and increase the Reds of Woodford’s unbeaten run to four games in the final stages of the season.

H - Leighton Town FC
Zamaretto League - Central division |
Tuesday 5th April 2011
Woodford United FC 2 - Leighton Town FC 0
Woodford United recorded their third win on the trot and dented the outside chance of LeightonTown’s play off hopes with a home victory in a somewhat scrappy match.
Woodford’s top goalscorer Ricky Johnson was left on the bench after his bout of illness and Nathan Liburd and Ben Foster were given the task of leading the line. In the early Stages it was their pace that unsettled the experienced backline of LeightonTown and it proved to be an absolute cracker that gave Woodford the impetus in the match and Important lead when after a surging run from full back Guy Clark down the right wing his cross was volleyed home by Ben Foster with Leighton goalkeeper Kevin Marsh grasping thin air.
Leighton’s main threat was coming from set pieces and on a couple of occasions whipped balls flashed across the home box with no one able to add the final touch to allow Woodford a one nil lead at half time.
The second half was similar to the first with Woodford prompting for an important second goal and Leighton sending forward the big guns at every set piece opportunity in an attempt To get the elusive equaliser. But it was to be The Reds night and in the final minute of the match Nathan Liburd latched on to a ball on the right side of the box and was hauled down for a disputed penalty which was duly smashed home by Chris Jackson for another victory in the final stages of the season.

A - AFC Hayes
Zamaretto League - Central division |
Saturday 2nd April 2011
AFC Hayes 1 Woodford United FC 2
Woodford recorded a hard fought away victory at lowly Hayes to take themselves past the 50 point mark for the season with an emphatic first half performance which In general sealed the match by half time but the home side rallied in the second half only marred by the sending off of full back Gilbert Nuako on 65 minutes which
Ultimately lost Hayes the chance to get back in the game.
On 31 minutes Woodford scored an important opener to settle their nerves when a Tommy Kinch corner was met by the head of Ross Harris and his header was parried By Hayes keeper Tom Mcneil only for Woodford’s Chris Jackson to react the quickest and head the rebound into the corner of the net from 8 yards out.
The visitors now had the momentum and within minutes a superb through ball from Woodford’s captain Craig Pearman split the square Haye’s backline and allowed Ricky Johnson To run through, nick the ball around the advancing keeper and slot into the empty net.
With half time on the horizon on two occasions Haye’s pacy Liban Aiken went close to getting his side back in the match but was thwarted on each occasion to give Woodford A healthy half time lead.
The second half commenced with Ricky Johnson having to be replaced due to illness and the game seemed to sway towards the home side with their twin strikers Kevin Chakaodza And Troy Quarry-Powell causing concern in the visitors backline with their determined effort. It was no real surprise when Quarry Powell made an excellent run down the right side And then bent a superb shot around Woodford keeper Matt Finlay and into the top corner of the net to put Hayes back into the match. But the sending off of Gilbert Nuako on 65 Minutes for persistent dissent left the home side with a mountain to climb and Woodford were able to get enough grasp on the game for the remaining period with Greg Kaziboni hitting the post On 85 minutes before the final whistle gave The Reds a nice victory on the road.

H - Bedfont Town FC
Zamaretto League - Central division |
Saturday 26th March 2011
Woodford United FC 0 Bedfont Town FC 3
BedfontTown claimed the three points after taking advantage of some inconsistent defending in the last 30 minutes of the match by the home outfit, Woodford United.
The match started well for Woodford and after 15 minutes a long through ball out of defence put Ricky Johnson away down the middle only for his goal ward shot to be Blocked by the legs of Bedfont’s keeper Gary Ross for a crucial stop. The legs of keeper Ross came to the rescue once again on 42 minutes when Woodford’s Ben Foster found himself in space in the box and his shot was stopped dead by the keeper’s outstretched legs for another important save.
As the half time whistle beckoned it was the turn of Woodford’s keeper Matt Finlay to thwart Bedfont’s Lee Scott with his low drive well saved at the foot of the post to ensure that Both sides went in at the break level. The match turned on it’s head in the final third when on 60 minutes a right wing strike from Belfont’s full back Ryan Lake squirmed free from the grasp of keeper Matt Finlay and Rees Stanislaus was on hand to tap home for a simple goal. Within minutes of this setback another right wing cross from Bedfont was steered home by Lee Scott with the Woodford defence all at sea. The final nail in the coffin came for the home side on 80 minutes when substitute Russell Miner finished off a breakaway attack to give Bedfont a pleasing away victory.

A - Daventry Town
Zamaretto League - Central division |
Saturday 22nd March 2011
Daventry Town FC 3 Woodford United FC 2
This local derby served up a pulsating first half with a feast of goals, committed tackling and effort from all quarters with the underdogs Woodford United Taking their in form neighbours all the way with the final result in the balance all the way to the final whistle.
It was the visitors who burst into the lead after only ten minutes when a well timed tackle from Woodford’s Tommy Kinch fell to the alert Ben Foster in the box And he calmly rounded Daventry keeper Andrew Kemp to slot home for an impressive start. The home side not to be outdone were soon back level when on 12 minutes Ryan Howell connected with a cross at the near post to force the ball home for an important quick equaliser. Woodford continued to show a level of commitment which unsettled Daventry with the battle up front between Woodford’s tall striker Ricky Johnson and twin defenders Aaron Parkinson and Jason Lee adding spice to the evening entertainment. On 25 minutes Woodford took the lead once again when Ben Foster, starting his first game since joining from Daventry United, received the ball on the edge of the box and twisted and turned to fire an unstoppable left foot drive into the top corner of the net to once again give the impetus to Woodford. Once again, not to be outdone Daventry bounced back with minutes of the half remaining when centre back Jason Lee pushed forward for a corner kick and he lost his marker to firmly head home to put Daventry back into the game.
The second half was never going to keep the momentum of the first with both teams looking for the elusive winner. On 75 minutes it was Daventry substitute Howard Forinton Who broke the deadlock when Woodford’s Ross Harris misjudged the bounce of the ball on the edge of the box and Forinton managed to pinch the ball and send a high lob up and over Woodford keeper Matt Finlay to drop just under the bar for a great winning goal but a sucker punch to the hard working Woodford outfit.
In the final five minutes Woodford’s Nathan Liburd was thwarted by a last gasp tackle as he burst into the box but it was DaventryTown who proved victorious in front of over200 spectators on a night that they will know they were taken to line and probably somewhat fortunate to take all three points.

A - Uxbridge
Zamaretto League - Central division |
Saturday 19th March 2011
Uxbridge FC 5 Woodford United FC 1
There are times when the score line does not reflect the actual game and this fixture at Uxbridge certainly proved the point. Woodford started the game in top gear and looked Capable of overwhelming the home outfit with waves of attacks in the opening minutes. It was no surprise when after 5 minutes a Neil King corner was headed home by Ricky Johnson To give the Reds a confidence building start. When suddenly out of nothing on 11 minutes Uxbridge’s Sean Farrell latched on to a knock back some 25 yards out to hammer a superb Volley over keeper Matt Finlay and into the top corner of the net for an equaliser in their first real attack. In the next five minutes the game could have taken another turn when firstly Ricky Johnson outjumped home keeper Michael Piwonski to head goalwards only for the alert Uxbridge full back James Walters to head clear under the bar and then it was Johnson again who found space in the box from a Guy Clark cross but he put his header wide when in a good position to score. These let offs proved costly when on 17 minutes a lapse of concentration by Woodford’s Ross Harris allowed Ryan O’Toole to nip in behind the defence to shoot home for a flattering score line. To further rub salt in the wounds on 40 minutes Woodford’s Nathan Liburd got past his marker and burst into the box only to be hacked down from behind as he shaped to shoot with the referee surprisingly waving play on for what looked a definite penalty.
The early stages of the second half certainly proved to be a more even contest and it proved to be another officials decision that turned the game in favour of the home side when on 55 minutes A through ball allowed Ricky Johnson to run through a static defence and shoot past the advancing keeper only to have the goal disallowed by a late linesman flag for off side which looked another
Dubious decision on a day where Woodford certainly did not get the rub of the green from the men in black. This further setback seemed to take the wind out of the sails of Woodford and Uxbridge Took full advantage to push on and score three further goals in the final ten minutes with substitute Hussein Warsome side footing home on 80 minutes, a penalty from Toby Little on 85 minutes after Woodford’s Tommy Kinch was adjudged to have fouled Warsome on the bye line and Sean Farrell completed his brace of goals on 87 minutes to inflict a heavy defeat on Woodford in a match that Twisted and turned and could have actually gone either way.

H - Slough Town FC
Zamaretto League - Central division |
Tuesday 15th March 2011 Woodford United FC 1 Slough Town FC 3 Woodford gave it their best after somewhat gifting Slough two first half goals and getting back in the game with a Cracker from Ricky Johnson on the half time whistle! In the early periods of the game Slough looked the livelier of the two sides and striker Simon Martin was creating a few anxious moments for the home defence. It was No real surprise when on 26 minutes it was Martin who latched on to a flicked header to put him in space in the box and he clinically finished the move to put The Rebels in the lead. The visitors put themselves in the driving seat when an under hit back pass from Woodford’s Daniel Burke on 35 minutes allowed substitute Sean Sonner to run through and fire the ball past keeper Matt Finlay for probably his first touch of the match. It looked like Woodford were in for a difficult night until the tide turned when Woodford’s Guy Clark made a deep cross from the right wing to find Striker Ricky Johnson 20 yards out and his first time volley flew into the corner of the net for a goal of the season contender as the half time whistle beckoned. The second half started with Woodford finding more momentum and they went in search of that important equaliser, on 55 minutes full back Guy Clark made a surging raid down the right side and his Shot flashed wide of the far post. Still enthused by his first half strike on 70 minutes Woodford’s Ricky Johnson took advantage of a long kick from Keeper Matt Finlay which deceived the Slough Backline allowing him to out muscle centre back Dave Woozley but having found the space Johnson held his head in his hands as his half volley flew over the bar for a great opportunity to grab the equaliser. Slough had not really created many problems during the first half hour of the second half but a sudden decisive break on the right wing from Steve Sinclair gave him the chance to float a ball across the goal past the diving Matt Finlay into the corner of the net for a killer goal with only ten minutes remaining to sew up the match.

H - Marlow FC
Zamaretto League - Central division |
Saturday 12th March 2011
Woodford United FC 1 Marlow FC 0
Neil King scored the crucial goal on 70 minutes for Woodford ‘s first goal in four matches to give their outside chance of a play off position a slight boost. In a match that never really burst to life, especially in the first half on a difficult hard pitch, Marlow certainly had their moments relying mainly on the pace of Jermaine Roche and Aaron Couch to get in behind the Woodford backline, well marshalled by the influential Ross Harris, recording their 14th clean sheet of the season.
On the half hour a surging run and cross by Woodford’s Nathan Liburd found Ricky Johnson at the far post but his downward header did not have the power to beat Marlow keeper, Michael Watkins who collected the ball low down at the post. With ten minutes of the half remaining Marlow had their first real effort when Jermaine Roach latched on to a quick ball forward but saw his shot take a deflection And loop up over the bar. The best chance of an away goal came in the 41st minute when Jon Case was put clear on the right but he shot wide of the target to go in all square at the interval.
On 55 minutes a sweeping cross from Woodford’s Chris Jackson was brought down in the box by Ricky Johnson only to be thwarted by a last ditch recovery tackle by Marlow’s defender Gavin Lane. The winner came on 70 minutes after a foul on Nathan Liburd on the edge of the box allowing Neil King to step up and bend the ball around the defensive wall and into the corner of the net for his 8th goal Of the campaign.
Marlow had their moment on 84 minutes when Woodford’s Guy Clarke misjudged a tackle on Adam Dickens with a penalty immediately awarded. Dickens brushed himself off to take the spot kick but Woodford’s keeper Matt Finlay came to the rescue diving to his right to push away the ball for a crucial save.
The final minutes of the match proved to be frantic with Marlow pushing players forward only to be further denied by a block save from Finlay and a goal line clearance from Tommy Kinch to secure the valuable three points for “ The Reds “ of Woodford United.

A - Biggleswade Town
Zamaretto League - Central division |
Saturday 5th March 2011 Biggleswade Town FC 1 Woodford United FC 0
Woodford came away from the impressive Carlsberg Stadium and the team in form BiggleswadeTown pointless in a game that they will be cursing their luck after a performance that deserved at least a share of the points with a late penalty dramatically saved by the home keeper.
The Waders came out in the early stages with a vengeance and top scorer Paul Barnes found himself in space on a couple of occasions only to be thwarted by Woodford’s keeper Matt Finlay. Woodford were certainly not overawed and on 30 minutes had a succession of 3 corners where on each occasion the visitors Nearly opened the scoring with a Nathan Liburd header cleared off the line, a Ross Harris shot hitting a defender and looping just over the bar and a Neil King Shot tipped to safety by The Waders keeper Dean Bull to keep the onslaught at bay. On 39 minutes a stroke of luck fell to the home outfit when a clearance from Woodford’s Chris Jackson hit the back of his fellow defender Ross Harris and the ball fell to Waders Paul Barnes only a few yards from goal and he gratefully finished With precision past the stranded Finlay.
The second half never really burst to life but it was Woodford that enjoyed a lot of the possession as they searched in vain for the equaliser. The striking partnership of Ricky Johnson and Nathan Liburd has not quite had their early season thrust since the new year but on a few occasions Liburd latched on to flicks from his strike partner But could not get the necessary space or accuracy to get Woodford back in the game.
The final nail in the coffin came in the closing minutes of injury time when Woodford’s Ricky Johnson latched on to a through ball from Neil King and was flattened in the area By Waders full back Peter Gatti, who will count himself lucky just to receive a yellow card, for a penalty kick and a nervous nail biting moment for Chris Jackson who unfortunately Saw his spot kick pushed around the post by Waders keeper Dean Bull for a match winning save.

A - Soham Town SYCOB
Zamaretto League - Central division |
Saturday 12 February 2011 Soham Town Rangers FC 3 Woodford United FC 0
Soham Town sealed this victory with two first half goals that literally sewed up the match against an out of sorts Woodford outfit who never really got into the game over the full duration of 90 minutes.
The opening encounters looked promising for Woodford and after only 5 minutes Nathan Liburd chased a long ball to the right bye line and clipped a superb cross to the far post Where Ricky Johnson rose above two defenders to send a header just over the bar but the tall striker will have been disappointed not to have hit the target. In general this early effort Was the only real attempt at goal for the Reds of Woodford during the whole match and Soham claimed the important three points in their battle against relegation with striker Deakin NapierCausing problems in the Woodford defence throughout the match.
The home side took the lead after 8 minutes when Deakin Napier found space in the box to hit a shot goalwards which Woodford's keeper Matt Finlay did well to block only for the ball to fall to Michael Simpson who slotted home into the empty net. On 45 minutes Soham put themselves in the driving seat when Declan Rogers latched on to a through ball to fire home.
Woodford manager Phil Mason made tactical changes at half time introducing Guy Clark and Tommy Kinch returning from suspension in an attempt to stem the flow and get back in the match. Whilst the changes meant a more attacking formation down the flanks with over-lapping full-backs the comeback never really materialised as the Soham backline remained firm.
The match was finally sewn up on 75 minutes when a loose ball in the box caused havoc resulting in keeper Matt Finlay bundling over Soham's Luke Hipwell for a penalty which was despatched From the spot by Rogan Mcgeorge to wrap up the points.

H - Hitchin Town SYCOB
Zamaretto League - Central division |
Saturday 5th February 2011
Woodford United FC 0 Hitchin Town FC 0
In a game that was far from a bore draw Woodford’s resolute defence recorded their 13th clean sheet of the season and somewhat halted the title charge of Hitchin on a day When the league leaders free scoring forwards were well marshalled by the Reds backline led by stalwart Chris Jackson.
The first real effort on goal came on 15 minutes when Woodford’s Nathan Liburd saw his cross cum shot smack the bar after the flight of the ball bemused Histon custodianMartin Bennett. Woodford continued to be the dominant force and on the half hour a teasing cross into the heart of the penalty box was superbly cleared with a diving last
gasp header by veteran defender Mark Smith with Ricky Johnson waiting to add the final touch at the far post.
It surprisingly took 35 minutes for Hitchen to make their first impression on the game and it was top scorer John Frendo who latched on to a scramble in the box to hit a low Drive which was well saved at the near post by Woodford’s alert keeper Matt Finlay.
The second half never really burst to life and their was only a few moments of sparkle but Hitchen’s star striker Zak Burke had his moment on 65 minutes and will be disappointed Not to have done better when he latched on to a Ross Harris headed back pass to balloon over the bar with just Finlay to beat.
In the final minute of the match Woodford’s Neil King could have claimed the headlines when he had a surging run from midfield and smashed a shot goalwards only for Hitchen’s Keeper Martin Bennett to come to the rescue with an impressive diving save to ensure the league leaders a hard fought share of the points.
The result meant that Woodford dropped a few places in the league table but their form and performances against the top sides has been excellent this term as “ Top Dogs “ Hitchin Has found with draws home and away.

A - Slough Town SYCOB
Zamaretto League - Central division |
Tuesday 25th January 2011
Slough Town FC 3 Woodford United FC 3
After two disappointing previous results The Reds of Woodford left the temporary home of SloughTown at HollowaysPark with their heads held high after an impressive performance That deserved to take the three points and the home side and supporters will be thanking the match official for two crucial decisions which were the turning point of an enthralling match. With a number of players still unavailable Phil Mason drafted in 17 year old Leon Edwards at full back and introduced on works experience NorthamptonTown’s Gregory Kabonanoi, who showed some silky skills and neat balance on his debut.
The game burst to life in the first few minutes when a long free kick from Woodford’s Neil King found Ross Harris in space and he cleverly knocked the ball home for a confidence building start for the visitors. The game was proving to be end to end with the movement of the Slough forwards keeping The Woodford backline on their toes as they worked hard to keep the lead. The writing was on the wall when after 30 minutes a Slough corner was headed clear and Slough full back Danny Murphy had a rasping shot that smacked the post and fell to safety.Within minutes another corner for the Rebels was met at the near post by Sean Sonner to flick the ball into the corner for an important equaliser.
But Woodford were in the mood and pushed forward with a vengeance to get a strangle hold on the game. On 35 minutes overlapping full back Guy Clark whipped a ball into the box and striker Ricky Johnson stooped low to head home. As the half ended Johnson was unlucky to see another header from a corner cleared off the line by Danny Murphy and Chris Jackson found space to strike a fierce shot goalwards with the ball rising just over the bar at the last moment.
The second half commenced with Woodford once again on the attack and on 47 minutes a through ball from Chris Davies allowed Ricky Johnson to take on Yiadom Yeboah and he found the space to strike a left foot shot across the keeper Charlie Fanner and into the far corner for his 15th goal of the campaign.
But the match was far from over and Slough bounced back when on 55 minutes Steve Sinclair picked up a loose ball on the edge of the box and bent a neat shot around the despairing dive of Woodford keeper Matt Finlay to put the game back in the balance.
The final 30 minutes of the match will be remembered for two controversial refereeing decisions that broke the hearts of the Woodford faithful after a resounding performance. On 62 minutes a Neil King corner was headed home by Nathan Liburd on the goal line and he celebrated as the referee signalled for a goal but for some unknown reason with no interference from his assistant linesman the match official suddenly changed his decision and gave a free kick for a phantom foul.
The evening was to get even worse for the hard working and unfortunate Woodford outfit when in the last minute of the match as a Slough forward with minimal contact from Woodford’s Daniel Burke as he went away from the goal hit the deck as if poleaxed and amazingly the match official pointed to the spot giving Danny Burnell the opportunity to strike the ball home and give Slough the share of the points in a match that for long periods was out of their reach. The game ended with a sour note in more ways than one with Slough’s Paul Coyne dismissed for an off the ball incident.

Zamaretto League - Central division |
Saturday 22nd January 2011
Beaconsfield SYCOB 4 Woodford United FC 2
Beaconsfield romped to a home victory with three goals in the final ten minutes of a Topsy – Turvey match when it looked as if the visitors Woodford, playing with a reorganised side Due to suspensions of Natt Liburd and Tommy Kinch as well as young prospect Liam Ruddick being recalled to Corby, had somewhat pinched the points.
The match started well for Woodford as they looked to wipe out the memory of a poor midweek result and after only 15 minutes Ricky Johnson laid a pass Into the run of Troy Farden who found himself clear in the box but his touch was too heavy and Beaconfields alert keeper Carl Dennison was able to smother the ball.
Within minutes it was the home side who took advantage of this let off when a free kick from the left wing on 20 minutes found Aaron Mcleish in acres of space and he Gratefully glanced his header home to give Beaconsfield the edge in the match.
Woodford not to be outdone bounced back on 37 minutes when midfielder Chris Davies weaved his way into the box only to be pulled back by full back Matt Mooney, With the referee having no hesitation in awarding Woodford their third penalty in two games, Chris Jackson stepped up to confidently fire home into the top corner.
The second half was a scrappy affair with neither side looking able to break the deadlock but who could have guessed what was to come. On 60 minutes a long lofted free kick. Deep in his own half from Woodford’s keeper Matt Finlay gave Ricky Johnson the opportunity to rise with a pack of players and add a deft touch off his head to send the ball into the corner of the net and give the Reds a crucial lead and something to play for in the remaining minutes of the match.
The game swayed from end to end during the next twenty minutes with a snap shot from Woodford’s Neil King on 80 minutes nearly increasing the visitors lead but just flashed wide of the post.
A mediocre game burst into life in the last ten minutes with the introduction of Beaconsfield substitute Ricardo Cannon, having recently joined the club after spells at DidcotTown and Flackwell Heath, within minutes of getting on the pitch he scored the vital equaliser when he outjumped Woodford keeper Matt Finlay to a high through ball and saw the ball roll into the empty goal. Then to compound the pain to the visitors on 85 minutes he found space far too easily to head home a corner from 8 yards out to put Beaconsfield on the road to victory. The game was finally sewed up in the last minute when Richard Shittu found space in the box to fire home from an acute angle for an important win after a poor run of results.

H - Northwood FC
Zamaretto League - Central division |
Tuesday 18th January 2011
Woodford United FC 0 Northwood FC 1
Northwood rode the storm and rode their luck to secure a smash and grab victory with their only shot on target in the whole match. After only 5 minutes it looked like Woodford were in the
Mood to continue where they had left off on Saturday when a Kinch corner was headed against the bar by Ross Harris when well placed and the rebound was hit over the bar by the follow up of Chris Jackson.
This really told the tale of the match with an array of missed chances and after waiting 28 games for a penalty The Reds were awarded two disputed penalties and neither converted.
On 33 minutes another Tommy Kinch corner was met by Ricky Johnson at the near post but his header hit the wrong side of the post and fell to safety, after his winner last Saturday Johnson will have been disappointed not to have added to his tally on an evening where his touch and efforts in front of goal could not find that elusive and important opener.
The second half proved to be once again very much one way traffic for the home outfit and on 60 minutes Nathan Liburd appearded to have been barged off the ball in the box by Northwood’s Edward Hatcher resulting in a red card for the hard working defender and Woodfords first penalty of the season. Ricky Johnson stepped up to strike the ball to near to keeper Michael Parkin and he was able to parry the ball and thwart Woodford’s effort to take a lead in a game they had dominated. The longer the game went on it just seemed it was to be one of those nights where the home side was never going to score and matters got a lot worse when an excellent run through the middle by Northwood’s impressive midfielder Miles Jones on 85 minutes saw him find a gap in the home defence and he advanced into the box and fired home for literally their first shot on target in the match but what a decisive moment for the visitors.
The excitement was not over as with a couple of minutes remaining Woodford were awarded another disputed penalty when Jones was adjudged to have handled in the box which brought protests from all angles by the visitors and they were overjoyed to see Liam Ruddick’s penalty kick fly high and wide for a final let off in a game that whilst you must give credit to Northwood for their effort and endeavours should have been won comfortably by The Reds of Woodford.

H - Arlesey Town FC
Zamaretto League - Central division |
Saturday 15th January 2011
Woodford UInited FC 2 Arlesey Town FC 1
Woodford secured the 3 points in this pulsating top of the table clash at Byfield Road with a last gasp winner from striker Ricky Johnson.
The game started well for the home outfit when a Tommy Kinch corner on 15 minutes was thundered home with a header from defender Ross Harris. Woodford enjoyed the majority of the play during the first period, with efforts from Neil King and Nathan Liburd nearly increasing the lead but the slick inter passing of second place Arlesey Always looked dangerous and capable of getting them back into this crucial game.
Sure enough, on 42 minutes a cross from Arlesey’s Joel Mason was met by the impressive Harry Hunt to score off the crossbar for the equaliser.
The second half proved to be an end to end encounter with both sides looking for the elusive winner. The deadlock was nearly broken on 65 minutes when a deep cross from Woodford’s Chris Jackson was met at the far post with a header from Ricky Johnson only to see the ball hit the foot of the post and fall to safety with the keeper, Richard Hayward well beaten.
Arlesey certainly had their moments with Hunt shooting wide on 70 minutes when working himself into a good position and then minutes later a turning point in the game when Striker Zema Abbey saw his goalbound shot somehow knocked up and over the bar by the Athleticism of Woodford defender Jerry Moss.
With the full time whistle beckoning on 87 minutes a neat pass from Woodford’s Liam Ruddick allowed Ricky Johnson to side step his marker on the edge of the box and bend the ball around the static keeper to give The Reds an important moral boosting victory and keep them in the hunt for a play off position at the end of the season.

A - Burnham FC
Zamaretto League - Central division |
Saturday 8th January 2011
Burnham FC 2 Woodford United FC 1
The Blues of Burnham made hard work of their victory against nine man Woodford United in a game that will be remembered more for the inept and somewhat bemusing performance of the
Match official, O’Donnell that gifted the match to the home outfit and left the Reds of Woodford with a mountain to climb.
The first half was never much of a spectacle and the first real effort on goal was a speculative effort after 35 minutes from Burnham’s Lee Togwell which was easily saved by Woodford custodian Matt Finlay.
The game turned on its head on 40 minutes when Woodford’s leading goalscorer Natt Liburd was dismissed by the referee after two innocuous challenges on Burnham full back Dave Tilbury in quick succession which the official felt warranted a yellow for the first followed by a red for the second challenge, even though, with the referee slightly unsighted, his linesman who had a good view of the incident had highlighted to him that there had not been a challenge worthy of a caution.
The second half was always going to be a uphill struggle for the visitors but Burnham did not cause any real concerns for the hardworking Woodford outfit and solid defensive backline, who can boast 12 clean sheets in the first half of the season. The game took another terrible turn for the visitors on 60 minutes when Woodford’s Tommy Kinch went into a full blooded challenge with Burnham’s Tilbury with neither player giving an inch and to the amazement of the under pressure visitors Referee O’Donnell brandished a red card to Kinch, for his first ever dismissal in his career.
This body blow proved to be to much of a hurdle to over come and Burnham with their two man advantage finally found space to get the opener on 70 minutes when Romeo sent a long cross from the right to the far post where striker Ryan Bird rose well to head home. Five minutes later a long ball from Ben Hudell found Bird in space and he advanced into the box and struck a fierce shot past Finlay for his second of the match.
Whilst against all the adversity Woodford rallied the troops and in the final fifteen minutes took Burnham to the wire with firstly substitute Troy Farden showing neat skills in the home penalty box only to see his shot hit the foot of the post and fall to safety and then on 85 minutes a Neil King free kick was bent into the box eluding all the defenders and deceiving Burnham keeper Sam Mazurek to find the corner of the net. With all their advantages Burnham would have been happy to hear the final whistle and Woodford were left with a gallant effort and a bad taste in a match ruined by an over zealous official which will create further problems for The Reds of Woodford, when being a small squad you encounter a number of suspensions over the coming weeks.

Monday 3rd January 2011
Woodford United FC 4 AtherstoneTown 2
Woodford bounced back to victory after the lengthy snow enforced lay off with a pulsating six goal first half thriller.
Within minutes of the start a surging run from Woodford’s striker Ricky Johnson saw him upended in the box as he shaped to shoot only for the referee to give Atherstone a late Christmas present as he waved play on when it certainly looked like The Reds would be getting their first penalty of the season.
This decision did not deter the home side and on 8 minutes a lofted Liam Ruddick free kick was met at the far post by centre half Jerry Moss to head home for his first goal of the season.A crazy five minutes followed when a corner kick from Tommy Kinch on 13 minutes saw Atherstone keeper punch the ball out to the feet of Ricky Johnson who gratefully side footed the ball home for an impressive start to the match for the home outfit. The visitors whilst stunned were not finished and in a two minute spell found themselves level when on 14 minutes good work by Tyron Amory gave top scorer Simeon Smith the opportunity to side foot home and within 60 seconds Jamie Purslow picked up a loose ball in the box to put the ball into the corner of the net to bring the match level.
Whilst this was a blow to Woodford they always looked like they could get further goals and on 38 minutes a Neil King free kick was met at the far post by Chris Jackson who headed the ball into the path of Defender Ross Harris who slid the ball home for his first goal of the season and put the Reds back in the driving seat. With the end of the first half beckoning a foul on Ricky Johnson just outside the box
Gave Liam Ruddick the chance to step for the free kick and bend a superb effort around the defensive wall and into the corner of the net for a great finish to the half.
The second half proved to be a slog in the bog with the pitch getting heavier as the match progressed and neither side looked as potent as the earlier periods of the game. The game did burst to life in the last five minutes when a Jerry Moss header was saved at the near post and scrambled away for a corner and from the corner kick a flicked header from Ricky Johnson was palmed out by keeper Courtney Belford To Chris Jackson who thundered a shot against the cross bar. Atherstone to their credit never gave up and in the last minute a mazy run and shot from Tom Weale was well saved by Keeper Matt Finlay to give the Reds a convincing victory to the start of the year.

H - Soham Town Rangers FC
Zamaretto League - Central division |
Saturday 20th November 2010
Woodford United FC 1 SohamTown Rangers FC 0
Woodford United slipped their way to a tight victory on a heavy pitch at Byfield Road with a goal from Top Scorer Nathan Liburd in the final ten minutes of the game.
The match started well for the home outfit with Liburd getting on to a lofted through ball from Daniel Burke after 10 minutes but his shot could not find the target. On 15 minutes Soham came back into the game with pacy right winger Deakan Napier going on a mazy run past a number of defenders only to see his shot go tamely wide Of the post. Midway through the first half Woodford carved open a couple of chances with Neil King firing just over after finding space and then Troy Farden was just unable To get a good connection on his header from a Tommy Kinch cross but their gallant efforts for The Reds could not break the deadlock.
The second half proved to be a midfield battle in the mud with captain Craig Pearman attempting to push his team forward in difficult conditions. Soham certainly had their moments With winger Deakan Napier causing some anxious moments with his pace and crossing ability and Woodford’s full back Tommy Kinch had to be at his best to thwart the threat down the right flank. After 70 minutes Soham’s new French signing Franck Atangana will be cursing his luck when his open goal header hit the ground and bounced up and over the bar to give the home side A somewhat lucky escape and the chance for them to go on and sew the game up.
It was Woodford who took advantage of this let off with the strike partnership finally coming up with the goods when on 80 minutes Ricky Johnson slotted a defence splitting pass into the stride of Nathan Liburd and he won the chase for the ball with Soham’s keeper Daniel Bircham to see his deflected shot enter the net for an important late goal and bag the three points in what proved to be a hard fought victory.

A - Leighton Town FC
Zamaretto League - Central division |
Tuesday 16th November 2010
Leighton Town FC 2 Woodford United FC 1
The old saying goals change matches certainly came true with this tight encounter at Bell Close with Woodford going down 2-1 in a game that they had completely dominated
For the first forty minutes of the game.
On ten minutes a surging run and pass from midfield by Neil King to Ricky Johnson on the edge of the box gave him the chance to cleverly slip a pass into his fellow striker Nathan Liburd
Who ran on to slot the ball in at the near post past Leighton keeper Joe Cox for a thrilling start to the game for the visitors.
This goal certainly gave Woodford the momentum to continue their push forward in search of that important second goal and long range efforts from midfielders Troy Farden and Neil King both were
Well struck but rose over the bar at the last moment to keep the home side in contention.
On 30 minutes Leighton had their first real effort when a looping header from defender Stuart Deaton had to be helped over the bar by Matt Finlay and keep Woodford on the front foot. Minutes later Deaton had to leave the field with a suspected broken nose and was replaced by assistant manager Peter Clifford who would ultimately prove to be a rock in the middle of defence for LeightonTown.
The game was turned upside down in the final five minutes of the half when on 41 minutes hesitation and poor marking in the visitors backline allowed Leighton’s James Hatch the opportunity to collect a bouncing ball in the penalty area and with Keeper Finlay in no mans land he lobbed the ball over him and into the empty net for a crucial equaliser. Minutes later the penalty curse came back to haunt Woodford
When a chipped cross from the left wing by Troy Farden was destined for the head of Ricky Johnson only for the striker to be crudely blocked by a clever defender and the referee waved play on leaving the bemused visitors still awaiting that first penalty decision of the season after 21 games.
The second half unlike the first never really got going for Woodford and they struggled to breakdown the stubborn backline of Leighton well marshalled by the experienced Peter Clifford. On 50 minutes a burst
Forward by full back Guy Clark ended with a neat lay off to Ricky Johnson ten yards out but his drive was superbly blocked by Clifford who threw his body in where it hurts to keep the home outfit on level terms. As the match continued it was Leighton who were gathering momentum and on 70 minutes a lapse of concentration by Matt Finlay allowed Liam Howley to nip in and score as Finlay waited to collect a ball which looked his all the way.
In the final minutes of the match Woodford attempted to get back into the game but the soft second goal looked to have taken the spirit out of the visitors even though Jerry Moss pushing up front headed
A ball into path of Top scorer Nathan Liburd but his angled shot could only find the side netting and the chance of a share of the points went begging. Leighton will know they rode their luck in the early stages
But they perservered and got the important goals with a concerted effort and maybe some good fortune that gave them the three points.

H - Uxbridge FC
Zamaretto League - Central division |
Saturday 13th November 2010
Woodford United FC 3 Uxbridge FC 0
Woodford claimed three precious points with an emphatic victory against lowly Uxbridge who were destined for the bottom of the league
After this resounding defeat at Byfield Road.
It was Woodford that powered into the lead after seven minutes when Neil King collected a ball in midfield and advanced forward to strike a low shot
From the edge of the box which hit the diving keeper Michael Plwonski and looped into the net for his fourth goal in four consecutive games.
On 16 minutes the best move of the match saw Woodford take a 2-0 lead when a flowing move involving Troy Farden and Nathan Liburd put the advancing full back Guy Clark
Into the penalty area and he bent the ball around the keeper for a superb start to the match and put the home side firmly in the driving seat.
Even though, Woodford did not have everything their own way and Keeper Matt Finlay had to be sharp on a couple of occasions with efforts from Howe and Thomas to thwart the advance of Uxbridge as they tried in vain to get back into a game that was running away from them as the minutes ticked by.
As the half time beckoned Johnson laid a ball into the path of Nathan Liburd but his advance was halted with a brave block from Uxbridge’s custodian Michael Plwonski to give his side a faint chance
Of recovery in the match.
The second half commenced with Woodford constantly on the attack and a fine move involving Liburd and a neat pass from Neil King put Ricky Johnson in on goal but his drive from the edge of the box
Clipped the outside of the post with the keeper beaten. The reprieve for the visitors was short lived when minutes later Woodford killed off the game when Ricky Johnson collected a long through ball after 50 minutes to place a perfect pass which evaded Uxbridge’s skipper Wayne Carter’s despairing intervention into the path of fellow striker Nathan Liburd who had the task of side footing home and get himself back into the goalscoring groove to put the “Reds” firmly in control.
The game then became a bit of a stalemate with Uxbridge’s Tom Green causing some anxious moments when he had a double effort firstly blocked by a home defender then smashing the rebound against the upright but the ultimate result was never really in doubt and the “ Reds “ of Woodford continue their push at the top of the league table.

A - Marlow FC
Zamaretto League - Central division |
Saturday 6th November 2010
Marlow FC 0 Woodford United FC 1
To coin the phrase " football is a funny game " certainly came true in this top of the table clash at one of the country's oldest clubs, Marlow FC. In an enthralling encounter "The Reds" of Woodford overcame adversity and against all the odds recorded an unlikely victory to bounce back to second position in the league.
Marlow commenced the game with a vengeance and after two minutes good work from Jon Case on the right wing gave Leigh Mason the opportunity to thunder a shot against the bar and when he headed the rebound goalwards Woodford central defender Jerry Moss prevented the ball entering the net with his arm and the referee had no hesitation in issuing the red card. It was Mason who stepped up to take the resultant penalty but his low strike was superbly pushed round the post by Woodford's custodian Matt Finlay, who himself sustained a shoulder injury for his efforts.
The match could have now developed into an Alamo situation with Woodford having their backs to the wall but the depleted side seemed to gain confidence as the half developed and they were able to restrict the home side to only a few chances, with Jermaine Roche having the best chance of the half only to smash the ball against the bar on 10 minutes with only the keeper to beat.
Woodford defended diligently throughout the first 45 minutes and on a rare attack after 20 minutes Ross Harris was unlucky to see his header from a corner just clear the bar.
With the numeric advantage Marlow enjoyed the majority of the second half possession and were creating half chances in the early stages but could not apply the all important finish, several times top scorer Aaron Couch found himself in a good position but lifted the ball high and wide on all occasions.
The game took an interesting turn on 65 minutes when Marlow debutant keeper Dexter Burt had to leave the field of play with a facial injury and defender Gavin Lane took over the gloves. This change in situation seemed to give Woodford a sniff of a chance and within minutes a lofted through ball from Tommy Kinch found Neil King and he advanced into the penalty box and lifted the ball over the substitute keeper for his third goal on the trot and to give the under pressure visitors a lifeline and something to grasp and fight for.
The home side now threw even more players into attack and at times the final minutes was like a game of pinball as the football hit the bar, last gasp tackles, valiant headers and good saves resulting in Woodford securing the points and Marlow reflecting on their missed chances but the day belonged to ‘ The Reds ‘ for their workmanlike and plucky team performance that even received applause at the end of the match from a section of the Marlow supporters.

H - Biggleswade Town
Zamaretto League - Central division |
Saurday 30th October 2010
Woodford United FC 1 Biggleswade Town 3
The welcome return to the home side of goalkeeper Matt Finlay & striker Nathan Liburd from injury and Tommy Kinch rejoining from Oxford City was spoilt by two early goals each half from set pieces and a late late goal to give the " Waders " a somewhat flattering 3-1 away victory.
The Reds manager Phil Mason will be wondering when Lady Luck will be on his teams side after another frustrating match of dubious refereeing decisions at crucial points of the game. After only 5 minutes Ross Harris was harshly adjudged to have handled when blocking a cross and Biggleswade took advantage to float the free kick into the box and poor marking allowed Jon Woolf to head home from only 6 yards out for a disputed opener. In general Woodford took control of the game after this setback and pushed forward with Kinch and Ruddick both advancing down the flanks on a regular basis. It was no surprise when a neat through ball from Tommy Kinch found Neil King advancing into the box and he was able to poke the ball wide of the keeper for a deserved equaliser. Biggleswade were in the main relying on counter attacking and it was Woodford that were putting their backline, marshalled well by Steve Gentle and Liam Folds, under constant pressure. From one such move Nathan Liburd outpaced his marker and his cross appeared to hit the arm of the covering defender in the box only for the officials to wave play on and give the under pressure Waders a let off that would prove to be a crucial turning point in the game.
The second half started with The Waders once again taking an early lead after only 46 minutes when a long throw in was headed on by defender Steve Gentle which found Stephen Smith and his volley hit the post and nestled in the corner of the net for a emphatic start to the second period. The match then followed in the pattern of the first half with Woodford trying in vain to get back into a game that they had dominated for lenghty periods After 65 minutes a Neil King cross found the head of Ricky Johnson
and his goalbound effort was pushed around the post by Waders keeper Dean Bull. A wave of attacks from the home side could not breakdown the visitors resolve, with a King snap shot and A Ross Harris header all being useful efforts but could not find that elusive goal.
With minutes remaining the game finally turned on its head when a Woodford long throw was flicked on by Ricky Johnson to the unmarked Nathan Liburd but his volley did not have the venom to beat the keeper and the visitors took advantage to venture down the park on 88 minutes and the game was sealed when Waders Paul Barnes took advantage of a defensive mix up, with Woodford's Harris and Moss colliding, leaving Barnes the chance to slot the ball past keeper Finlay and send the visitors home with a smash and grab victory.

A - Daventry Town
Zamaretto League - Red Insure League Cup |
Tuesday 26th October 2010
Daventry Town FC 4 Woodford United FC 1
DaventryTown extended their unbeaten run to ten games with this convincing victory over local rivals Woodford United as they advance to the next round of The Red Insure Cup. If you could have been a fly on the wall in the two changing rooms there would have no doubt been a clear message from both management teams to keep it tight at the back and not concede an early goal! Unfortunately, this advise was not heeded by the visitors and within 5 minutes of the start of the game a goal was gifted to Daventry when Woodford full back Guy Clarke, with time to clear the ball decided to play the ball back to keeper Goode but did not connect properly and Daventry's alert striker Tom Berwick was given the opportunity to fire the ball home.
Minutes later it was Daventry who showed a lapse of concentration when a huge punt down field from Keeper Jack Goode deceived defender Aaron Parkinson and Ricky Johnson latched on to the ball only to see his left foot drive go narrowly wide of the far post. This let off gave the home outfit a boost and they took control of the match with decisive link up attacking play between Dunkley and Berwick which was wearing down the overworked Woodford backline. On 35 minutes Woodford keeper Jack Goode was called into duty when he made a flying save from Berwick and the rebound was smashed against the bar by Dunkley and fell to safety.
It is goals that change the format of the game and it was Woodford that bounced back to equalise after 38 minutes and put themselves back into the match when former Daventry player Neil King picked up a loose ball on the right side of the area to advance into the box and smash the ball home.
The second half commenced with both sides in search of that important next goal and it came to the home side in a somewhat controversial manner as Woodford's Karl Fellows was adjudged to have made a handball in the box when it was in fact the visitors appealing for handball from the advancing attacker. The referee waved there protests away and Tom Berwick stepped up to knock the ball into the corner of the net for his brace of goals and give Daventry the impetus in the game and deflate the enthusiasm from Woodford.
Daventry took advantage of this fortunate goal and pushed forward to finish off the tie and on 59 minutes Adam Confue got on the end of a cross from the skillful Josh O'Grady to side foot home a decisive third goal. Woodford's custodian Jack Goode made a couple of excellent reflex saves during this onslaught but was unable to stop
the fourth goal on 67 minutes when full back Terry Fitton allowed Rob Foster to nip behind him and slide the ball home to wrap up any chance of a comeback from their local rivals.
Even though the result will appear convincing, Daventry certainly did not have everything their own way and with a little bit of good fortune and a rub of the green with officials decisions Woodford could certainly have scored further goals with Ricky Johnson's aerial threat in the penalty area creating opportunities in the remaining 15 minutes for both Neil King, who collected a ball headed down from his strike partner only to see his drive well saved by Daventry keeper Joe Mellings and moments later it was central defender Chris Jackson who received a far post header from Johnson ten yards out but could not get a clean connection at goal. In the end it is DaventryTown with the local bragging rites as they look forward to welcoming Zamaretto Premier Division league leaders CambridgeCity to CommunicationsPark on Saturday for the F A Trophy encounter.

H - Barton Rovers FC
Zamaretto League - Central division |
Saturday 23 October 2010
Woodford United FC 0 Barton Rovers FC 0
Woodford retained second spot in the league but now find the closing pack on their heels after this somewhat dour match on a
wet and slippery surface at Byfield Road that both sides found difficult to master, ending not surprisingly in a disappointing 0-0 draw!
Woodford will be thanking young keeper Jack Goode for a number of reflex saves that kept the home side in the match at crucial periods of the game. In footballing terms the match was certainly a game of two halves with Woodford taking the honours in the first period and the visitors cursing their luck in the second half where they created enough chances to pinch the points.
In the 5th minute Woodford's defender Ross Harris ventured forward for a corner and his floating cross deceived the keeper to dip and bounce on top of the crossbar and fall to safety. The impetus was with the home side and on 25 minutes a Liam Ruddick cross was headed goalwards by Ricky Johnson and Barton 's keeper Grant Beckwith parried the ball away to keep the score level. A minute later the home backline were caught square and Barton's Bilal Hassan ran on to a through ball only to lob the ball over the advancing keeper and wide of the open goal.
The first half nearly burst to life when Ricky Johnson collected a poor defensive header to advance into the box and as he shaped to shoot he appeared to be caught by a lunging tackle from behind by Barton captain Paul Andrews, the referee signalled no foul and once again Woodford await that elusive penalty decision which has eluded them all season, in a total 16 games!
The wet surface was still causing problems in the second period with Barton starting to adapt better to the conditions and it was the visitors that created the better chances with midfielder Ricky Case going close on two occasions thwarted by the alert home keeper, Jack Goode.
Woodford had their moments but all to often rushed their final pass or shooting opportunity and struggled to get length with their forward passes which kept them on the back foot as Barton grew in confidence. The chance of the match fell to Barton's Bilal Hassan and Joe Corrie as the clock ran down but thier mis-hit shots from a few yards out when well positioned told the story of a frustrating match.

A Bedworth United FC
Zamaretto League - Central Division |
Tuesday 19th October 2010
Bedworth United FC 2 Woodford United FC 1
This game was always going to be an interesting encounter after the weekends FA Trophy results, with Woodford's defeat to high flying Leamington 3 -1 and Bedworth's humiliating 10 nil defeat at the hands Matlock Town.
It was Woodford that came out of the blocks the quickest and in the opening stages looked like they might overwhelm the home outfit. On 12 minutes a Woodford corner was met at the far post by Ricky Johnson and his downward header appeared to be blocked by defender Geo Dainty well inside the goal line but the officials waved play on when finding themselves in poor viewing positions. This let off appeared to spur on Bedworth, who were determined to put on a hard working show after the weekends disappointment and their defenders robust style was shown leniency by the match official on numerous occasions, with Woodford striker Ricky Johnson on the end of a number of dubious challenges!
Bedworth took the game to Woodford after the early stages and stand in keeper Jack Goode had to make a couple of excellent blocks to keep the visitors in contention with the Woodford midfield unable to keep the ball or set up attacking moves and the defence struggling with its shape in an attempt to stem the flow of the The Greenbacks forward advance.
On 60 minutes Bedworth finally broke the deadlock when Dean Rathbone picked up a loose ball on the edge of the box and his low strike eluded keeper Goode to nestle in the corner of the net. Minutes later, Ricky Johnson was laid out by Bedworth's Dougie Greenaway with another rash challenge resulting in lengthy treatment and referee Ed Smart brandished his first yellow card of the night which on another day could certainly have been a Dismissal.
Woodford probably had their best spell of the game after this incident and Centre half Jerry Moss ventured forward to meet the resulting free kick and his flicked header smashed against the post and fell to the feet of fellow defender Chris Jackson at the far post but he was just unable to steer the ball into the empty net.
The match turned clearly in Bedworth's favour on 75 minutes when the dangerous Levi Ramsey went on a mazy run which saw him go past five players before scoring at the near post for a decisive second goal.
In the final 15 minutes the introduction of youngsters Liam Ruddick and Troy Farden seemed to give Woodford added impetus and a curling cross from the right wing from Ruddick on 84 minutes allowed Ricky Johnson to crash the ball home for his tenth goal of the season and give the visitors a faint chance of getting back into the match.
Whilst the final minutes were somewhat frantic Woodford will look at the game as points lost and a disappointing display but credit to Bedworth who set their stall out and put in a workman like performance to wipe away the memories of the weekend and give them three valuable league points.

H Leamington
FA Trophy |
Saturday 16th October 2010
Woodford United 1 - Leamington 3
Woodford United were unable to pull off a shock in the FA Trophy as they went down 3-1 against Leamington in front of nearly 300 fans at Byfield Road.Phil Mason’s side were always up against it and, although they made a game of it in the second half, Leamington always had too much in the locker for the Zamaretto League Division One Central highfliers.
The premier division visitors established a 2-0 interval lead through James Husband and Craig Wilding but Ricky Johnson reduced the arrears before Liam Daly ended Woodford’s fightback with a late third.Woodford were dealt a blow prior to the first qualifying round tie when keeper Matt Finlay was ruled out through injury and Jack Goode came in for his first start between the posts. And he was soon called into action, saving well from Matt Lewis following a slip by defender Ross Harris.
Woodford were stretched to contain the visitors but all too often gave the ball away with hopeful long passes after working so hard to win possession in the first place. Leamington dominated the first half and finally broke the deadlock in the 25th minute when Craig Pearman gave the ball away and, with the home defence slow to react, Lee Downes returned the ball into the box, Wilding headed on and Husband fired home.
Hitman Johnson was well contained by the experienced Jamie Hood and Daly as Woodford found it difficult to penetrate the Brakes’ rearguard with only a couple of fierce drives from Chris Jackson causing the visitors any problems. Leamington doubled their advantage five minutes before the break when Wilding headed home at the near post from a Lewis free-kick. That looked to be that but Woodford stepped up a gear in the second half as the Brakes took their foot off the pedal.
Woodford enjoyed their best spell of the game in the opening stages of the second half. Troy Fardon had a goalbound blocked by Scott Lycett and Karl Fellows was denied by keeper Tony Breedon as the Reds looked to get back into the contest. Johnson reduced the arrears on the hour, volleying home the rebound after Neil King hit the post and substitute Liam Ruddick rattled the bar when it came back to him. It was no more than Woodford deserved and the possibility of a replay loomed.
But Leamington closed the game out and regained control in the closing stages. Wilding volleyed over from Hood’s free-kick and was then denied by Goode before Daly headed home Husband’s 82nd minute corner.

A Bedfont Town FC
Zamaretto League - Central Division |
Saturday 9th October 2010
Bedfont Town FC 0 Woodford United FC 3
Woodford continued their early season form with a sizzling second half performance that blew away their hosts and established their position in the top two of the league.
At a time that most clubs are on the look out for goalscoring forwards " The Reds " are in the enviable position of boasting that their two strikers Nathan Liburd and Ricky Johnson share the top place in the league's top goalscorer chart with seven goals apiece.
Even though, Liburd has been missing for the last three games due to a thigh injury the side has found a hot vain of form scoring 12 goals without reply which has seen them push to the top reaches of the league.
The location of Bedfont's ground is certainly in a unique position directly under the flight path of Heathrow Terminal 4 and the constant drone of large airplanes over the pitch, which were taking off nearly every 90 seconds, gave the game a somewhat strange environment. In general the first half never really took off and proved in general uneventful as both sides attempted in vain to get the important opener. It was Bedfont that created the first chance in the 5th minute when forward Gavin Hart found space
only to drag his shot wide of the goal. Minutes later the Woodford backline hesitated to challenge a long ball and Aaron Samuels found himself in on goal with the visitors being saved by the linesman's flag. The deadlock was nearly broken on 30 minutes when Woodford captain Craig Pearman whipped in a right wing cross which got a wicked deflection off of the head of Bedfont's centre half Matt O'Brien and Ricky Johnson was just unable to steer his diving header at the far post back towards the goal. This gave the visitors a little more momentum and on 40 minutes midfielder Troy Farden collected the ball about 30 yards out and his drive flew narrowly over the crossbar for the final effort of the half. At the end of a disappointing half it was apparent that the most excitement had come from the flight over the ground of the magnificent and huge A380 Airbus which shadowed the ground as it took to the sky's.
The second half definitely proved to be a different ball game and it was Woodford that took a firm grip of the match and put on an attacking show which has found them to be the league's top goalscorers. On 60 minutes a forward surge from left back Guy Clark caused disarray in the home backline and a neat bending cross from fellow full back Karl Fellows allowed Clark to nip into the near post and side foot home the all important opening goal. This hammer blow knocked the stuffing out of the home side and two minutes later a huge punt down field from keeper Matt Finlay caught the Bedfont backline square and Ricky Johnson took the opportunity to run through the hesitant defenders and head the bouncing ball up and over the advancing custodian Gary Ross to give Woodford important breathing space.
On 65 minutes it was Woodford keeper Matt Finlay that changed the possible course of the game when he made a superb block from Bedfont's Russell Miner when his shot looked goalbound.
The match was sealed in the 80th minute when substitute Terry Fitton played a defence splitting pass into the stride of Ricky Johnson who advanced down the right side
and laid a ball across the front of the goal with Neil King waiting to add the final touch which was thwarted by an alert defenders last ditch clearance only for the ball to go back into the path of Johnson who smashed a left foot drive into the corner of the net for his eighth goal of the campaign.
In the shadows of Heathrow terminal 4 this victory left the " Reds " of Woodford flying High!

H AFC Hayes
Zamaretto League - Central Division |
Tuesday 28th September 2010. Woodford United FC 5 AFC Hayes 0 Woodford blasted themselves into second place in the league with an emphatic second half attacking display that left their visitors AFC Hayes wondering what had hit them. The first half was only three minutes old when Red's man in form Chris Davies picked up a loose ball on the edge of the box to delightfully chip the ball over the head of Haye's keeper Simon Grant for a superb opener. The match actually went flat from this point and was somewhat of a dull spectacle but it was Haye's who started to take the game to the home outfit and were being prompted by the impressive left sided Domonic Rhone. On 30 minutes Claudio de Almedia had a good opportunity to equalise when he found himself in a good position in front of goal but his hurried shot was high and wide. The home crowd would never have guessed what was to come as the second period commenced but within two minutes a perfect pass from Troy Fardon allowed Neil King the opportunity to outpace the last defender and fire home an unstoppable shot in off the upright past the despairing dive of keeper Grant. This early goal relaxed the rampant Reds and they pushed forward in search of further goals. On 65 minutes a free kick into the box boobled and bounced around the penalty area before Ricky Johnson forced the ball home with a neat header at the far post. Within ten minutes Chris Davies received a ball on the edge of the box to drive a low shot into the corner of the net, receiving a nasty knock for his trouble which meant him leaving the field of play. As the final whistle beckoned Woodford made it five goals for the night when a Neil King free kick was met within the box by a towering header from striker Ricky Johnson and the ball sailed past the diving keeper for a night to remember. To make the victory even more impressive the nights tally made the Reds the top goalscorers in the league.

A Atherstone Town
Zamaretto League - Central Division |
Tuesday 28th September 2010. Atherstone Town FC 0 Woodford United FC 4
Woodford took the bite out of the Adders with this emphatic victory, with midfielder Chris Davies scoring a brace of spectacular goals that he will dream about for days to come! The final scoreline looked a distant hope in the first fifteen minutes with Atherstone showing some slick attacking play but were unable to breakdown the stubburnvisitors backline.
It was left to the stocky figure of Davies to open the scoring when he latched on to a Karl Fellows cross to smash a 20 yard bullet into the corner of the net. Within minutes it was Davies who nearly increased the lead when he found space from a flicked Johnson header only to rush his shot and fire high and wide. On the half hour
Atherstone's Greg Moseley had the home sides best effort when his left foot drive went the wrong side of the upright.
The second half saw Atherstone huff and puff but still never really created definite chances, where as Woodford were creating opportunities nearly everytime they attacked the visitors defensive line. On 60 minutes a left foot drive from the edge of the box by Ricky Johnson was superbly saved when substitute keeper, Thomas Shepherd dived low to his left and palmed the ball to safety, then a surging run from Guy Clarke down the left flank and a telling cross was met by Neil King but he could not keep the ball down and it soared over the bar with the keeper beaten.
It was left to Chris Davies to show how it is done when on 73 minutes he collected a ball around 30 yards out to shape up and bend a precise effort around the keeper and in the side of the net for his brace of goals to truly remember.
Atherstone continued to probe and push forward only to find the Woodford central threesome of Moss, Harris and Chris Jackson in no mood to give them anything. With Chris Jackson even going forward for a corner on 85 minutes to slot his sides third goal and his first of the campaign with a deflected left foot piledriver.
It was left to new signing Neil King to mark his return to Woodford when on full time he collected an excellent cross field ball from man of the match Davies to fire a low drive through the legs of the home keeper and complete a night of misery for the Adders!

H Beaconsfield SYCOB FC
Zamaretto League - Central Division |
Saturday 25th September 2010
Woodford United FC 1 Beaconsfield SYCOB FC 0
The Woodford striking partnership of Ricky Johnson and Nathan Liburd combined once again to give the " Reds " a valuable home victory in a game that never really sparkled and could certainly have been a more comprehensive win.
Whilst the scoreline was tight and the match was in the balance up to the final whistle," Reds " striker Johnson will be disappointed that he did not finish off a number of created chances after working himself into good scoring positions.
In the first minute of the match it was Johnson that chased a long ball and appeared to be clattered in the box by the visitors keeper Carl Dennison, only for the referee to wave play on, which still leaves Woodford without a penalty decision in their favour since the start of the season, a total of ten games! After a dull opening the game came to life on 16 minutes when Ricky Johnson burst through the middle of the Beaconsfield backline only to find on this occasion keeper Dennison make a fine diving save.
Minutes later it was Beaconsfield's Tom Nutter who spurned an opportunity when he headed wide from a deep cross from the right wing. As the half progressed a further chance fell to Woodford's Johnson and Ross Harris saw his neat header well saved by the visitors custodian to give a half time scoreline of nil nil.
The second half proved to be a midfield battle, with Woodford welcoming back into their line up Neil King, having signed a few days earlier from local rivals Daventry Town. His presence will undoubtedly be a bonus and strengthen Woodfords squad as they attempt to continue their good start to the season.
The winner came in the 60th minute when a Karl Fellows cross was headed down by Ricky Johnson into the path of top scorer Nathan Liburd to sweep the ball home for his ninth goal of the season and continue Woodford's momentum up the league table.

A Ashford Town ( Middlesex ) FC
Zamaretto League - Central Division |
Saturday 18th September 2010
Ashford Town ( Middlesex ) FC 2 Woodford United FC 3
Woodford United came away from Ashford's Robert Parker Stadium with all three points in a pulsating roller coaster match with Nathan Liburdgetting the winner in the final minute of the game.
It was Woodford that powered into the lead when a Liam Ruddick long throw on 21 minutes allowed Ricky Johnson to turn in the box and fire into the roof of the net.The home side were pushing forward throughout the half and were thwarted by a couple of excellent blocks by keeper Finlay then on 45 minutes Ashford's Luke Hickie got behind the Woodford defence only to shoot wide of the post when in a good position, giving a real let off for the visitors.
The second half saw Ashford play some neat inter-passing but they were struggling to breakdown the resolute Woodford central Defence of Harris, Jackson and Moss.Somewhat against the run of play a long ball out of defence from Woodford's centre half Jerry Moss on 60 minutes gave Nathan Liburd the opportunity to sprint forward and lob the ball over the advancing keeper, Paul Burgess for a 2-0 lead.
This set back did not deter Ashford from their attacking play and they were given a lifeline on 85 minutes when keeper Matt Finlay was harshly adjudged to have pulled down a home forward in the box, when it actually appeared he was himself fouled, Jordan Kiffin gratefully scored from the spot to put Ashford back into the match.Ashford now had their heads up and within minutes Luke Hickie jinked his way into the box and scored from an acute angle for a decisive equaliser.
The final word was with Woodford's leading goalscorer Nathan Liburd who wrote his own script when he ran on to a superb through ball from substitute Karl Fellows to side foot home for a dramatic last minute winner.

A Arlesey Town FC
Zamaretto League - Central Division |
Tuesday 14th September 2010
Arlesey Town FC 3 Woodford United FC 2
Woodford left the Armadillo ground empty handed in a game they had dominated for large periods but could not take control and ultimately leaked another three goals in a match that was there for the taking.
Once again it was Woodford that come out the traps the fastest and put the home defence under constant pressure with numerous goalbound efforts in the first 25 minutes being either denied or just pure bad luck. On 6 minutes Ross Harris saw his header strike an uprightand fall to safety, then Chris Davies exchanged passes with Johnson to see his drive go inches wide, before returning the favour by setting Ricky Johnson free with a delightful through ball and the striker saw his left foot shot go just wide of the far post with the keeper beaten The onslaught continued with a Chris Jackson header being superbly cleared from under the bar by Arlesey's Marc Leach. The home side then burst into the lead with their first chance of the match when a corner was converted by Alex O'brien at the far post. The first half finished with further frustration for Woodford when a Chris Davies free kick smashed against the bar with the keeper Richard Hayward rooted to his line.
The second half came to life in a space of ten minutes, firstly good work by Woodford's Davies and Liburd resulted in the ball being laid into the path of Craig Pearman who crashed the ball high into the net for a deserved equaliser. Minutes later Nathan Liburd took advantage of a square defence to advance on goal with the defenders calling for offside to no avail and it was Liburd who slotted home for his 7th goal of the season to put Woodford in a commanding position. Unfortunately, the visitors defensive frailties came back to haunt them and Arlesey's captain Derek Brown came forward to strike a volley home from a corner on 75 minutes and then the home side took the lead when Harry Hunt poked home a teasing cross at the far post with minutes of the match remaining.
As the final minutes ticked by defender Ross Harris nearly got the important equaliser but his header from a lofted free kick could not be kept down and flew over the crossbar. To compound a disappointing result Woodford's Troy Farden got his marching orders just prior to the final whistle for a second yellow card offence.

H Bury Town
FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round |
Sat 11 September 2010 Woodford United FC 1 Bury Town FC 3 Ryman premier side Bury Town advance to the next round of the prestigious FA Cup but the scoreline does not give a true reflection of the game. Even though, Bury's Chris Henderson will be celebrating after completing a hat trick of goals including two penalties. In the opening stages Woodford took the game to the visitors and will be disappointed that they did not get a firm hold on the match with a Ricky Johnson header smacking the bar and Liam Ruddick going close on two occasions. On ten minutes a long cross from Guy Clarke was headed down by Johnson into the path of his fellow striker Nathan Liburd who took a neat touch and slotted home. The match really turned on two dubious penalty decisions in each half, after 30 minutes a cross into the penalty area saw Bury's Sam Reed receiving minimal contact crumble in the box and to the home spectators and players disbelief Referee Francis point to the spot, the penalty was duly despatched by Henderson giving Bury a lifeline when they were clearly struggling to get back into the game. Minutes after the restart a mazy run by Chris Henderson saw him upended by Craig Pearmen as he advanced for goal and he brushed himself off to score from the spot sending keeper Finlay the wrong way. Then on 65 minutes Woodford's Karl Fellows marauding down the right side was sliced down in the box only for referee Francis to award a free kick on the very edge of the box when the foul was clearly in the penalty area, a dubious decision which knocked the spirit out of the hard working home outfit. To rub salt in the wound minutes later man of the match Chris Henderson ran through to complete his hat trick and give a somewhat relieved Bury Town the passage into the next round and leave Woodford with the thoughts of what might have been had they got the rub of the green.

H Brackley Town
Northants Senior Cup |
Tue 7 September 2010
Woodford United FC 1 Brackley Town FC 3
Woodford's illustrious neighbours Brackley Town move forward to the next round of the Northants Senior Cup after a victory they were made to work for every inch of the way.
Both managers took the opportunity to play a number of fringe players and it was the pace and the sharpness of the visitors that looked as if they would overwhelm the home outfit with Appiah, Blackwood and Basham all having chances in the first ten minutes of the match. It was no surprise when injury free striker Steve Basham popped up to score the opener on 16 minutes when he took advantage of a sliced defensive clearance to shoot home.
Woodford's tall striker Ricky Johnson was keeping the Brackley centre back pairing on their toes with his aerial threat and on the half hour it was Johnson who brought the equaliser when a lofted free kick from Davies allowed him to outjump the keeper to head home. Brackley nearly snatched the lead once again as the half time whistle beckoned but Basham saw his header hit the foot of the post and Storey was unable to steer the rebound home.
During the second period Brackley always looked sharper but Woodford's commitment and endeavour could not be questioned. On 62 minutes a high ball to the far post was poorly defended and Barry Quinn was left unmarked to head home. Within minutes the game was killed off when Owen Storey saw his looping shot from the edge of the box find the corner of the net.
The remainder of the game ebbed and flowed with Woodford creating a good opportunity to get back inthe game on 80 minutes when a Johnson flicked header was knocked into space by Nathan Liburd and substitute Leon Edwards found space in the box but his drive flew wide. This was the last of the action as Brackley eased themselves into the next round of the County Cup. |

H Aylesbury |
Sat 04 September 2010
Woodford United FC 2 Aylesbury FC 5
A catalogue of defensive errors brought Woodford their first defeat of the season at the hands of league newboys Aylesbury FC.
The home side could not have had a worst start when in the first minute a poor back pass by Danny Szczukiewicz was intercepted
by Felix Kyeremeh to advance into the box and slot home for a gift opener. Then to compound the problem on 5 minutes an Aylesbury free kick on the edge of the box was taken by Dean Brennan and his tame shot hit team mate Gareth Price wrong footing keeper Matt Finlay to nestle in the corner of the net, giving the visitors a somehat fortunate but emphatic start to the game.
The next goal was always going to be crucial and on 25 minutes and over a space of a couple of minutes the turning point of the match came with Woodford Striker Ricky Johnson, firstly beating the offside trap and lobbing the visitors keeper Steve Smith only to watch his effort go agonisingly wide of the post and then moments later running on to a ball at an acute angle to see his rasping drive palmed away by the Aylesbury custodian with no one able to connect with the loose ball that fell into the area. Aylesbury took full advantage and gave Woodford a mountain to climb when in first half extra time midfielder Gareth Price collected the ball on the left side and
found space to fire home at the near post past the unsighted Finlay for a three nil half time cushion.
The second half was mainly one way traffic for the home side as they attempted to get back into a game putting the visitors backline under constant pressure and Aylesbury relying on counter attacking breaks utilising the pace of forward Felix Kyeremeh. Finally on 80 minutes Woodford's Nathan Liburd got on the end of a cross from Troy Farden to slot home and give the home side a faint chance of getting something from the match. This hope was however short lived when within minutes Aylesbury star man Felix Kyeremeh chased a long ball from defence to outpace two defenders and strike home for his second of the match.
To complete a miserable day for Woodford on 89 minutes a cross from the left was deflected by Woodford sub Jerry Moss into his own net. As the final whistle beckoned Nathan Liburd found enough space in the box to scramble home his fifth goal of the season and complete a 2-5 scoreline on a day which will leave both management teams with room for thought.

A Whitton United FC
FA Cup Preliminary Round |
Saturday 28th August 2010 Whitton United FC 0 Wodford United FC 3 The 300 mile round trip proved worthwhile for Woodford United winning this preliminary round FA cup match by a 3-0 scoreline with Troy Farden getting two first half goals and Nathan Liburd a third in the final twenty minutes of the match. The game came alive for the visitors on 22 minutes with midfielder Troy Farden running onto a Karl Fellows defence splitting pass to slot home past the outstretched hand of home keeper Darren Moyes. Minutes later it was Farden again who latched on to a through ball from Ricky Johnson to advance and majestically float the ball over the head of the advancing keeper to put Woodford firmly in the driving saet. The second half saw the home side play some neat interpassing football and they were getting themselves back into the game with the visitors defence at times creating problems for themselves with hurried clearances that resulted in more pressure on the backline. Whitton's strikers Ronaldo Wright and Anton Clarke both had opportunities to score that elusive goal and put themselves back into the game but the chances went begging. It was Woodford that put the issue beyond approach when lively striker Nathan Liburd sprinted on to a long clearance from full back Danny Szczukiewicz to side foot home and put Woodford into the next round of this prestigious cup and set up a home fixture against last years league winners Bury United.

H Burnham FC |
Sat 21 August 2010
Woodford United FC 3 Burnham FC 0
Woodford continued their unbeaten run for the start of the season with an emphatic win against Burnham who finished the match with 9 men.
In the 7th minute Burnham knew they had problems when full back Dave Tilbury was sent off after an over the ball challenge. On 20 minutes the match burst to life when Nathan Liburd found space behind the visitors back line to shoot past the advancing keeper. On the half hour It was Liburd who then combined with Karl Fellows to send a high cross to the far post and his fellow striker Ricky Johnson saw his powerful header just clear the bar. Minutes later Burnham's Ryan O'Toole nearly brought his side back into the game when he weaved his way into the penalty box but he could not add the decisive final touch. With half time beckoning man of the match Nathan Liburd picked up a loose ball from a corner and drilled the ball home for an important second goal.
The second half was mainly one way traffic for the home side with Karl Fellows having numerous raids down the left hand side taking advantage of the extra man and space created. On 60 minutes Liam Ruddick ventured forward and made the game safe with an excellent strike from the edge of the box which found the corner of the net for a 3-0 scoreline. The match erupted in the final minute with Woodford's Terry Fitton and Burnham's Ryan O'Toole being sent off followed by Burnham's manager Jamie Jarvis. The incidents gave somewhat of a sour end to a noteable victory for the " Reds of Woodford United FC " |

H Rugby Town |
Tue 17 August 2010 (7.30)
Woodford United FC 0 Rugny Town 0
This midweek clash whilst not great on quality was certainly not a goaless bore draw with both sides endeavour not to be questioned. It was the Sky Blues of Rugby with nine new signings in their line up that made the early running and after five minutes a cracking drive from Rugby's Ben Steane struck the bar and fell to safety, with Woodford's backline having to stand firmly against the onslaught. On 20 minutes the visitors Seb Hamilton saw his snap shot neatly saved by home custodian Matt Finlay as Woodford attempted to regain control of the match. The best chance of the half fell to Woodford when Rugby's Centre back Callum Burgess saw his mistimed header loop over his own goalkeeper but was brilliantly saved by the finger tips of Dave Clarke, the ball fell to the feet of Woodford's striker Nathan Liburd but he lost his footing and was unable to steer the ball into the empty net.
The second half proved to be a more even contest as the home side gained confidence and took the game to Rugby. The Reds Striker Ricky Johnson was cursing his luck and the firm pitch when on 50 minutes he received the ball some 40 yards out after keeper Dave Clarke had headed clear when outside the box, his returned half volley beat the keeper and defenders to take a wicked bounce and just drop over the bar. It was now Rugby's turn to create a chance and on 65 minutes Seb Hamilton found space to strike the ball goalwards hitting the far post and from the rebound Richard Wesley was adjudged to have handled the ball which proved a real let off for the home side.Whilst Rugby attempted to push forward the best chances fell to Woodford in the closing stages. A flowing move involving Liburd, Johnson and Ross Harris saw his goalbound shot blocked for a corner and from the kick Kai RIdley had a powerful header parried by the keeper with no one able to find the final touch. On 85 minutes from another corner man of the match Ross Harris headed against the base of the post and Nathan Liburd headed the rebound goalwards only for Rugby keeper Dave Clarke to make another fine finger tip save pushing the ball to safety over the bar.
On the " good chances " count Woodford will no doubt be disappointed not to have taken the three points but the final whistle brought a share of the points and an unbeaten start to the season for " The Reds " of Woodford United.

A North Greenford United |
Sat 14 August 2010
North Greenford United FC 2 Woodford United FC 3
Woodford United started the season in style with an opening day victory against league newboys North Greenford United. The match proved to be an exciting end to end encounter with a pulsating final ten minutes giving the visitors the three points.
The game burst into life after only 5 minutes when Woodford's recent new signing Liam Ruddick bent a superb teasing cross into the penalty box which allowed striker Ricky Johnson the opportunity to rise and head firmly into the net past the despairing dive of home keeper Babbarcar Jallow. This early goal unsettled the home outfit as Woodford pushed for a second goal but as the half progressed Greenford began to gain some confidence and were themselves looking for the equaliser. On 24 minutes they got the chance to bounce back, a free kick was awarded on the edge of the box and Greenford's Dave Lawrence smashed the ball into the corner of the net. Woodford were now on the back foot and it was somewhat of a unfortunate incident that put them further behind. Greenford's Michael Murray saw his shot hit Striker Gary Senior, misfooting Woodford keeper Matt Finlay and nestled in the side of the net. In the final minute of the half Ricky Johnson looked to have worked himself through on goal only to be pulled down by Greenford's centre half Stuart Derry, the result a missed opportunity, a yellow card for Derry and a poorly taken free kick.
The second half proved to be a tough encounter with neither side taking prisoners, which saw two Greenford players having to be replaced due to injuries sustained. The home side were kicking down a slight slope and they were pushing hard for a further goal advantage but they found the stalwart defending of Ridley, Harris and Jackson hard to break down.On 75 minutes Greenford's Gary Senior slammed the ball against the bar from a corner and the game certainly looked to be going to the league newcomers as Woodford attempted to stem the flow. As they say football is a funny game and the match turned on its head in the final ten minutes with Woodford substitute Leon Edwards being instrumental in what proved to be a fantastic finish. After 81 minutes Edwards exchanged passes with Nathan Liburd on the edge of the Greenford penalty area and his drive flew into the net off the far post for a supreme equaliser. Within 3 minutes Edwards found space on the left and whipped in a cross which found Ricky Johnson first to react controlling the ball before blasting past the hesitant keeper for his second of the match. In the dying minutes Woodford had keeper Matt Finlay to thank for a point blank save from Nick Turner ensuring them an opening day three pointer !
